Camila Alvarado

WELCOME CLASS OF 2021!!! My name is Camila Alvarado and I am one of your freshmen liaisons. I'm a DMV native, born and raised in Potomac, Maryland.  I received my B.S. in biological sciences from the University of Maryland, College Park in 2011. At UMD I was part of the Gemstone Program doing research about crime prevention and perception, volunteered with Alternative Spring Break, worked as a community assistant, and spent a semester abroad in London.  During the summer of 2009, I participated in the Summer Medical and Dental Education Program (SMDEP) at Howard University where I first fell in love with HUCM and returned every summer since to work as the program assistant. Afterwards, I received my M.S. in interdisciplinary health science from Drexel University College of Medicine. Before starting medical school, I worked as a research technician at Walter Reed Army Institute of Research studying the neuroprotective and neurorestorative effects of the brain following traumatic brain injuries and also worked as a medical scribe. The journey of an untraditional student is long and windy, but it is all worth it to get here and become part of HUCM. While there are many great things about HUCM, the best by far is the family-feel. We all support one another to succeed and to do better, and your class will be no different.  Currently at HUCM I'm a member of the executive board as one of the VP of student activities, a member of the Latino Medical Student Association (I'm half Chilean, half Ecuadorean), and participate in several interests groups including OB/GYN, surgery, and emergency medicine.  In my free time I enjoy baking cupcakes, doing arts & crafts, completing puzzles, watching musicals, exploring new restaurants, shopping, watching TV/movies/Netflix, traveling (15 countries and counting), and spending time with friends and family. I’m excited to get to know all of you and help you on your medical school journey!
